Yesterday, to celebrate Emergency Preparedness Week, we started the conversation around Bug Out Bags, or BOBs. Useful in any emergency situation, they are as unique and special as you are. We continue today with a few more suggestions for the categories of items you might want to consider including in your BOB.

PERSONAL COMFORT
Having a few nice things can go a long way in managing your mental health. Items might include a toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, or a nice pair of comfy socks. Photos of friends and loved ones can help keep feelings of isolation at bay, and don't take up too much room.

In honour of Emergency Preparedness Week, we're posting a few tips and tricks to help you better plan for emergencies.

Today, we focus on Bug Out Bags (lovingly known as BOBs) and how they can help you in an emergency situation. Bugging out is military slang that means to move away from your current location as quickly as possible and usually means your position has been compromised. A BOB is usually a backpack that contains the right gear to help you survive until you reach a specified destination.

It's  EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK in Canada! We at the ZSG hope you are staying safe and thinking proactively about what you would do in an emergency, be it the zombie apocalypse or your house catching on fire. Here is a good list of starter questions to think about as you create your plan and consider your options for survival.
  • How would you find out there's an emergency in the first place?
  • What is the first thing you would do?
  • Who else do you need to consider? Who else is at risk in your neighbourhood?
  • What is the best way to contact someone during or after a disaster or disruptive event?
  • Do you have shelter-in-place procedures?
  • What back-up strategies do you have in place?
  • What resources do you have within walking distance of your home or place of work?
  • How can you exit your community quickly if you need to evacuate?
  • Do you have copies of important documents?
  • How can you preserve important documents in case of emergency?
  • What is your plan for pets?
  • Do you/your friends/your family have special health needs?
  • Does your family have a communication plan in case an emergency occurs while you are separated?
  • Do you know where your water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain are located?
  • What other emergencies might be triggered?
  • Will communication be affected?
  • Do you have an Evacuation/But Out Plan? Where will you go?
  • What skills will you need in the short term? The long term?
  • What is more beneficial: go solitary, find a small group, or gather a large group?
  • How long will the government take to respond? How will they respond?
  • Have you considered all seasons in your emergency planning?
  • Do you have a date set to update your gear for each season?
  • Do you have a Bug Out Bag?
